Construction Projects Are Disruptive and Cost Money!

Having a construction project in your home is disruptive and anyone that says differently is lying. Sorry to be so blunt but there it is. The trick is to manage the disruption taking into account every member of the family's needs and requirements. We take great care at the planning stage to incorporate this into the schedule of works.

This project will cost you a significant amount of money, again sorry for the straight talking but let's be honest about it! In these times of cash strapped family life the need to expand or renovate your house is going to be a financial upheaval and you want to know its going to be done well, on time and in budget.

Living In A Caravan Or Camping?

Whether you are living in a caravan outside your house or camping in the front half while the back half is being pulled down and rebuilt. The combination of family disruption and spending hard earned savings to achieve your dream house is going to be pretty much all consuming for the length of the project.

I personally have lived in 5 renovation and extension projects!! Although I have worked on many more construction projects - but on those I get to go home each day to a my own house. The first 3 were a long time ago when I was a kid living with my parents. The builds were achieved with an astonishing (to me now) lack of disruption and change to daily life. When I grew up and had the opportunity to renovate and extend my own houses I followed the same simple formula for successful construction projects: Planning, Communication and Excellent Quality Work!

At markwatson services we follow the same simple strategy in all our contracts.

The initial consultation and planning process is where we all get to explore the project in its complexity and fine detail.

We highlight the periods of expected worst disruption and add them to a schedule that allows you to take evasive action at those times if needed.

The budget and cost scheduling is transparent - you only pay for materials after they have arrived! Weekly wages are paid in arrears - you see us work first and pay after!

This is all done by setting out a staged payment plan that protects everyone. You will never be asked to pay more in any week than is on the plan. Any unexpected costs will be taken from a pre-determined contingency budget - that is totally under your control - And never requested immediately, always discussed, understood and scheduled ahead.

We have weekly scheduled progress meetings so that we all can have the opportunity to see how it is going in real terms for the other party. If you have any on-going concerns about disruption or a change of plan or ideas then this is where you get to say those things and more importantly, know that you have been heard. 

It's a process of communication that starts on day one and continues till the end of the project and for as long after as you need it to.

At the end of the project there is a day of completion and what a great day it is for you to have your house and life back!

At this point there will be a preliminary final payment that will leave you holding 10% of the projects total budget. On that day, between us, we will go over the work and produce a snagging list - a list of any little niggles that need touching up or in your opinion are not finished. This list will be systematically worked through over the next day or two until it is complete.

From the day of completion you will have a full 14 days to live in and examine the work. At the end of these 14 days, when you are completely satisfied with the outcome of the project, the remainder of the project total is due.

With a handshake and thankyou we will then leave you to enjoy your new house!
